Powerchair Football in France
Football is the most popular sport in the world. It is therefore natural that Football in electrically powered wheelchairs (or Powerchair Football) quickly found its place in the sports practices for the disabled. This discipline was born in France and Canada over 20 years ago, and is now a growing success.
This team sport is so far the only one accessible to people using an electric wheelchair in everyday life. It offers those with severe and multiple disability to live out their passion for football. It is the most widely practiced of the team sport of the French Federation Handisport, it expresses the emotions of sport, the happiness of victories, the adrenaline rush and pressure of competition.
Powerchair Football in France is:
• 48 clubs representing 70 competing teams
• 650 registered players in 2010
• 30 “leisure time” teams registered
A Federal Commission established in 1991 and a French national team reated in 2002, runner up at the World Championship, at the 1st World Cup in Tokyo (Japan) in 2007.
Recognized national competitions:
• A Championship in France with four distinct leagues
• France Cup
• FFH Trophy (friendly annual competition exclusively for players with cerebral palsy)
• Regional Cups, friendly tournaments.
The Games of the Future held every two years for young athletes under 16 years.
